With E15, comes new E85 - New Stations

Recommended Posts

Here are some new stations across the country that now offer E15 and E85 that were not listed in the existing stations. There are several hundred more in the works. This is not a complete list, but all I am going to get to this week. Have a great weekend. Robert

Whoa, Minnoco is selling E85 now???

I don't know what stands out at me more... Minnoco, or the phrase "several hundred more are in the works".

Robert, send me a message when you can.

Dan, I'll help you out with coordinates and phone #s when I get out of work at 2100 hours.

E15=88 octane?  This seems low.  If my memory is correct, the old Renew stations in Wisconsin featured E20 with 91 octane.    I have a photo with from a blender pump that shows E20 with an octane rating of 92!

According to that picture, E85 is labeled as having 105 octane, which is incorrect. Now I may be corrected on this, but I'm told all of these numbers are using the Reasearch Octane Number (RON) system, which is commonly used in Europe. State side, we use the "R+M/2" method. Correcting for this, E85 has between 94 and 100 octane.

Recall that in many regions, ethanol free is almost impossible to find. In Michigan we don't have 87 octane ethanol free alongside 87 octane E10, or 89 octane "super unleaded" E10 like they do in Iowa or Nebraska. Here, 84 octane gasoline - unlawful and unsuitable for use in gasoline automobiles - is blended with the 10% ethanol to make it 87 octane E10. Here in Michigan, retailers are not required to inform customers that the gasoline contains 10% ethanol - as such, almost none of them do.

Using that logic, 10% ethanol would increase the octane rating by 3 points. An additional 5% would theoretically increase the octane rating by 1.5 points. To be completely correct, these retailers are likely rounding the octane number down to 88.

Post below is accurate, you typically gain 1.5 octane points with an additional 5% ethanol. Keep in mind, every station offering E15 today is diluting a higher blend to make it. All of these stations are using E85, but that could be made from unleaded or natural gasoline. Could also vary tremendously in ethanol content depending on the region. We encourage any station wanting to post a minimum octane guarantee above one octane point higher than E10 to have it tested.

The station is Plymouth was advertised as VIP Minnoco, not sure how I didn't get that down in my original post - sorry.

Not all Minnoco stations offering E15 also have E85, some chose E30 as their highest ethanol blend. Not something I support, but others are pushing this effort in the ethanol industry.

My email is rwhite@ethanolrfa.org, if anyone wants more information. I will share what I can.
