Alternative Fuel for School Buses---conversion cost is 10K per bus!

Recommended Posts

Headlines of local paper features the local school buses being converted from diesel to CNG.  Currently 29 of the 119 buses are now powered by CNG with another 30 being converted by August 2015 via a $300,000.00 grant from the Department of Environmental Protection.   The stated figure for the cost of CNG is 50% less than a similar amount for diesel.   Buses have to be hooked up overnight to keep the in tank pressure high for drivability.   As for CNG, this county -just north of Pittsburgh-has 628 operating gas wells with a current total permit of 641 in 2014!   Consumer/Home residence prices for meter of Natural Gas continue to rise locally despite the huge local supply.

My last natural gas bill for the house was $152 for 155 therms. Basically $1 per hundred thousand btu's. When propane was going for $4.30 a gallon a few weeks ago I figured it would have been $725 to heat the house.

all of the local school buses in Omaha are running on Propane.  Sounded like a good idea 12 months ago...  CNG would have made more sense.

One very good point, where all those buses are lined up to load and unload, idling... not a hint of smoke or exhaust.  Especially in the winter with the kerosene in the diesel, that stuff was nasty.
