Florida repeals the state requirement that gasoline contain ethanol.

HB 4001, repealing the ethanol requirement established in 2008, passed the Senate 33-1 without debate.

 

The bill passed one House committee by one vote and another by two votes.

 

Florida companies that plan to produce ethanol issued a statement saying the Senate action suggests the state is "closed for business." A federal ethanol production requirement will remain in effect.

 

“All this bill has done is put politics and oil industry profits ahead of economic opportunity and jobs in the state," the Renewable Fuels Association, a national organization, said in a statement.

 

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Shalimar and bill sponsor, had argued that the requirement was bad for engines, bad for the environment and increased the cost of gasoline, which bill opponents denied.

 

"We are hopeful that after this long battle, the faithful patrons of our great state will be relieved of the overwhelmingly negative effects of ethanol," Gaetz said.

 

It now just has to be signed by Floridas Gov to be Law

A couple ways this can play out..

 

 

1. Most Stations will continue to sell E10 because it means they can price lower

 

 

2. We'll see an Increase in E85 Stations as ethanol will need to create new Markets since E10/E15 Market is going to be slowed and even lose market

 

 

3.All Stations stop selling any Gas with ethanol in it... umm that just isn't going to happen IMO

Bottom line IMO is that we see lower ethanol prices as E10/E15 loses marketshare ..meaning E85 price spreads grow making E85 more attractive for investment..

 

 

Moving away from ethanol as an additive to ethanol as an alternative fuel....is a win win for E85 drivers

 

 

 

 

These anti ethanol Folks are HELPING us pro ethanol as an alternative fuel like E85 people

the ethanol lobby will be screaming to high heaven about this...

 

With RFS...  arnt' they required to blend x% fuel with ethanol?    So if they are not doing it via e10...  won't they simply have to do it via e85?  So I'd think that RIN credits will be highly valuable... so e85 prices could become HIGHLY competitive...

 

Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Will not matter unless RFS is changed. Obligated parties still have to blend or buy RINs. Only in the latter case would that help E85 since added RIN value brings economics to blend E85. Most states have no such E10 mandate, yet E10 is all you get. Hopefully FL never had a mandate on marine fuels to be E10 but if they did this action should appease. Really this law change is just playing meaningless political gamesmanship.

"As blogger Dean Billing points out, simply repealing the current E10 mandate in Florida is not a guarantee that ethanol-free fuel will become available.  In fact, it could result in even higher levels of ethanol in fuels: “Florida has a state mandatory E10 law that went into effect on Jan. 1 of this year.  It was the last state to pass a mandatory E10 law, although two states have untriggered mandatory state E10 laws on their books, Montana and Pennsylvania.  What they are trying to do in Florida is repeal the state E10 mandate. Repealing the Florida mandatory E10 law will have no effect whatsoever on the federal ethanol production mandates that are part of the EISA 2007 law passed by Congress. The repeal could also remove the exceptions for marine, aviation, old cars, small engines, etc. and — unless he puts in place a prohibition of ethanol blending in premium unleaded — it may do more harm than good. The mandatory E10 law probably locks E10 as the maximum ethanol blending level.  If the law is repealed, it could open Florida up to E15, which was approved by the EPA for part of the vehicle fleet earlier this year. Iowa has no mandate but a friend just read the newsletter from  a co op that said no more 87 octane coming up the pipeline to NW Iowa starting next Fall. Just sub-octane and 91 and the 91 might not be consistent. The newsletter said the only possibility for E0 87 was to mix sub and 91.

Well, it's about the ridiculous anti-ethanol sentiment that has won the hearts and minds of Americans.

 

I used to think E-15 was a good idea. Now I agree with Dan! E-15 awoke the sleeping giant in the BS oil mega money machine and everyone feels that they are being forced to ruin their cars with all this distortion of reality, thanks to the war of words in the mainstream media ...which we know its origination!!!!!!!! All as far from the truth as Antarctica is from Santa Claus. BTW I have no general embedded animosity towards energy companies or capitalism. Just false information.

 

Get the ethanol industry back to pushing for FFVs and E-85, like ASAP. Played differently, things could go much better.
