Greengenes 9 Report post Posted November 14, 2006 Paul, Had trouble with cold starts and your 5.3 ?? I had a bout with my Silverado last winter where it would chug and spit before it finally caught. Didn't have a way to monitor code entries during these episodes, but I bet it would be interesting. Temps at the time were 10-15 F , 50% humidity.. It almost sounded like WAY retarded timing. It seemed to fire right away as normal but instead of kicking up to 800-1000 rpm, it just stumbled and shook abit first. Don't know what the mix in the tank was like, but I've run nothing but E85 since I bought it(unless there was no choice ).. What I need is a good set of shop manuals and a code reader , to start. I'm really not familiar with the current engine technologies in autos... (the last engine I built was a 304 V8 ) But I'm pretty familiar with aircraft engines... Something else noteworthy: coasting downhill would caused the computer to calculate upto 99mpg on unleaded (87). This I would expect. However, since switching over to E85, coasting down the same hill, the computer calculates no better than 45mpg. This would indicate that the idle mix programming is very rich, and this would explain why my mileage is so poor. I believe the engine is running rich all the time, hence, the great power, the easy starting, and the lousy mileage. -p Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I have been having the same problem with my chevy van.I am running a chipped ecu and I'm kinda thinking the atomization of the fule at low temps may be the problem.I can get it to run if I run foolish off the scale fuel mixtures,but the moments later it will kill and then I have to rechip with a leaner file.Any ideas? paulc 0 Report post Posted December 29, 2006 ChuckBfromtheBF, Portland, Oregon weather down to 26 F with no cold start issues on E85. Stations where I buy says they are running winter blend which I suspect is closer to E75, not E85. Interesting note; I had to switch back to UL87 for a few tanks, (no E85 on trip to the beach) and had bad starting problems; would not start, stumbling when it did, lots of re-starting/cranking, just wouldn't run. No black smoke out the talepipe indicating its not running rich. Once started and warmed up, it runs fine. Mileage is back up to 18mpg (avg highway) from 12mpg.
