03' Chevy Silverado 1500 - Want to Use E85

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I am wondering about using E85 in my Pickup. and I would like to know If i can just Pump e85 into my tank without any conversion.

Or should I use the Flextek Product.

It is at about 1.99 a galon as opposed to 3.25 for regular

Any Ideas?

Open up your fuel filler door and look on the back side for real tiny words in black on a white background that says E85- trust me- it will be so small you would not have noticed it previously. You can also check by looking at your VIN # in your windshield-- count from left to right- the 8th digit will be a Z on the 5.3L GM flex-fuel version. Flex-fuel Silverados were not as common as the Tahoe and Suburban because GM charged extra at that time for flex Silverados. If it is not a flex-fuel model then do not slam in full strength E85 into an empty tank- you will get a check engine light for "lean code bank 1". If you have a non-flex model read thru the threads on this site and decide what approach you want to take to either run high % ethanol, mid-level 30-60% ethanol, or <30% (which requires only that you just do it).

What I have reaad along with an interesting You Tube Video, it doesnt seem to have any negative effects on your vehicle if it is indeed a non-Flex vehicle.

The main thing you hear from word of mouth is

"It burns much hotter and will warp or burn up rings"

"It will eat away at your fuel lines and cause damage to injectors or filters."

do any of theses thigns have any merrit?

I've been running E85 for 4 years now in my '04 Silverado.

I don't see any of those problems.

After 50k miles , ave. fuel mpg comes in very near 15.

E85 is getting reasonalbe here as well  around 2.20/g

    Welcome aboard...

Yep.. FFV ..    About 50/50 on the miles driven.

Quite a few times over the continental divide ( Colorado ) , trailer in tow,  and

not a hint of a ping or mis-fire.

I do haul with it quite a bit( lumber ,  surplus gear , etc. ).

So it's seldom around town with nothing in back...
