Dang! How long can that last?

I've only seen 55 cent differences where I fill.

Western Convenience has been leading the way in E85 pricing since they

put their first station online about 2 years ago.  They also lead the way

in Unleaded gasoline pricing in this region  (5-6 cents lower than nearest competitor).

Prior to Western Convenience E85  was  40-50 cent spread or less and only a few

stations with consumer-friendly pricing.  Don't know where the ethanol

blending takes place, but with 3 plants now in operation within 150 miles

from Denver, transport costs aren't going to be much of a concern.

We also may have the lowest priced natural gas  in the nation here.

All this competition means consumers don't have to go far to get good value

for their dollar.  The governor has pushed E85 since coming to office, and made

mention of promoting it while campaigning -- part of the "New Energy Economy".

My hat is off to these Colorado stations--good job!

Does anyone know if the Colorado tax rules allow E85 (or blends of ethanol) a break as compared to gas? If so-how much?

Here in Wisconsin the state charges the same road tax for E85, gas, and diesel-- there is no BTU differential allowance except for LP and CNG

I spend too much time with stuff torn apart to get out and see them all. However, that is right on with what I've observed around town when I'm out. They all get their ethanol from the same set of plants out east. I don't know about the blender credits, though. There is a large group of local contracts with those plants for E85. E10 gets blended locally. They make the ethanol out east, but it gets blended out in Commerce City, AFAIK.

I can't wait for the cellulosic production to get cranked up and lower the price even more. The GBC is waiting on a dial-a-blend pump to get approval before they release intermediate blends here. It's a shame people think they can't use ethanol when they really just don't know how yet.

outlaw,

The taxes & credits on E85 aren't any different than other states. Nothing to adjust

the state tax rate according to BTU content, such as in Minn. We had an attempt

to do this in the legislature, but I think it died in committee. Most of the important

tax legislation around here seems to happen via citizen initiative ( ballot ).

I know Wyoming has a significant difference in state tax from us -- something like

10 cents less -- and they have the degaded highway system to prove it..

This is still an oil state. I'm sure alot of oil  people are irked each time they drive

past one of the W.C. E85 stations...

It all started with the station down at 300 south Broadway. He was the first station in the Denver Metro area (possibly the state) to pump E85 and he has consistently held the line on pricing with the lowest price in town.

I used to drive 20 miles each way to fuel up down there at $1.79 per gallon -- last I checked he was still at $1.99 per gallon. Local E85 users have used him as a benchmark and thrown his pricing in when we complained about other stations that were over pricing.

Personally I would say something like -- "you realize that by driving less than 10 miles I can buy the same fuel for x cents less a gallon than you are charging. I was going to fill the tank but only topped off and will go down there to fill up!"

The market will respond it you apply long term pressure for lower prices and enough users are willing to drive a few extra miles to vote with their wallet. The local corn growers association also had a Colorado E85 price watch on their web site.

If you guys in other states want to bring prices down get up a local price watch and spread the word who is trying to give you a fair deal on the fuel.

Larry

The above link is state only excise taxes but it does not appear to cover E85 (some state might give e85 a btu break)-- only NL, E10, and diesel. While Wyoming only has 14 cents (no doubt road issues at that), Colorado 22 cents, and Wisconsin is the tax queen at 32.9 cents (we have potholes galore this spring- heard the DNR might arrest guys fishin' in them  :o)
