  1. This is an easy one. Kick the legs out from under the table and the argument falls apart.

     

    The United States Department of Agriculture reported in 2010 that ethanol returns 1.42 energy by ratio than is put into it. This number, however, does not take into account secondary inputs.

    Overall, Corn Ethanol uses large amounts of energy but most of it is clean renewable energy. Notice that the energy consumption is per mile so there's no confusion with energy density. Corn Ethanol in FFVs use less Fossil energy than even Hybrid vehicles. And a fraction of it is Petroleum based.

     

    One more note on the charts is the GHG numbers. E85 is cleaner than Gasoline but emissions aren't nearly as clean as Hybrids. Automakers still need to figure out the PZEV issues with E85. I know that's been an issue with selling FFVs in the 13 states following California emissions for some time.


  2. It looks like the API's latest FUD campaign is under way. Wasn't there a rumor about this recently? I guess the CRC study being picked apart wasn't enough for them.

     

    The biggest lie in advertising is that it must be true in some form or fashion. In fact if they can get away with outright lies they will lie. There's nothing partisan about it.


  3. I was curious about Mazda and FFVs so I emailed them about it and got some spiel about the new Skyactiv, which I'm very familiar with by now.

     

    I was perusing their international website when I found one of their major initiatives from 2009 stating they were going to introduce FFVs to North America in March 2010! It looks a lot like a graphic designed for a meeting of shareholders or other important people. So I emailed them about that and got more crap about Skyactiv and how great it is. >:(

     

    Anyway, here's the initiative. The E85 bit is on the top of page 4 but there's some other stuff about how they were going to embrace Hybrid cars and improve fuel efficiency by 30%. Which explains their recent reversal to supporting hybrids after shunning them. It was a planned move from the beginning!

  4. I get emails from Growth Energy from time to time about campaigns and their latest news. There's no better way to keep tabs on them. ;D This one looks to be from Fuelsamerica.org and not originally from Growth. There's even an infographic, which I prefer to the usual spiel straight out of a handbook. I have some doubts about the accuracy though for example; 70% support the RFS and 80% of environmentalists? Does that make the 90% of people I see on the internet to be the loud minority? ???

  5. They're really playing up the FUD. Nevermind that most cars made since 2001 are out of warranty and capable of running up to E30 without a problem. Thanks mostly to adaptive learning of newer ECUs. The only way to prove otherwise would be to run it and have something fail. I'm not saying they were designed to run E30, infact I'm saying the only way to prove it is to test it. Because we already know they can adapt. Plus it's a much lower risk on a 2001 beater than a 2011 still under warranty.


  6. I remember reading a gardening book several years ago that recommended planting ground cover for winter but never during growing season. It certainly makes sense considering how barren the ground usually is under a corn crop, blue grass would grow fantastic there! There were some studies in recent years of the benefits of adding a third or even fourth crop the the corn-soy rotation. I wonder if it could be mixed with the experimental technique in Sub-Saharan Africa involving using trees and multi-culture crops to improve soil quality. Because lets face it, monoculture farming is doing horrible things to our soil.

     

    Besides biting, the Asian ladybug can be particularly annoying around Halloween when they move indoors. I've seen swarms so huge that you could fill several dust pans.  >:( They are also beneficial but they're just a variation of the ladybug, IMHO.


  7. I test drove a couple Foci, cranking the seat height all the way down was the first thing I did when I sat in one.

     

    I tried to like the 6 speed powershift, I really did. But it was garbage. The cheap "selectshift" button was about as responsive and obedient as an obese sloth. It makes Mazda look like a premium brand. Also the fact that the sport aka "style package" was a $2500 option.

     

    The downside to the Focus base engine is that no one tunes the ECU. All the tuners are jumping on the ST. Even though the factory ECU will adjust for premium or E85, it's still limited by the extremely conservative factory maps.

     

    Edit: Scratch that last part, it appears I'm out of the loop and there's a tune out.

If ethanol's octane and ability to withstand preignition/spark knock is only the same as 94 octane gas, then my engine is going to have a very bad time. 13:1 with iron heads is far too high for 94, on gas with that octane it would rattle itself to death and probably knock the upper rod bearings flat. The 4.181" bore does not help the situation for spark knock either, because a larger bore is more sensitive than a smaller bore.

     

    Its true that the test doesnt show accurate results, but the reality of it is ethanol can withstand far more compression and ignition lead than gasoline can. You have to get into some very expensive race gas to get close to what ethanol can handle easily.

     

    I agree but the octane rating is correct even if it doesn't necessarily translate to the real world. Just ask corey how his turbocharged high compression engine is doing. ;D

     

    Or even better check this out. Stock Toyobaru engine but with a custom 93 AKI vs E85 tune.  8) (Blue is stock which is 91 AKI Required, Red is 93 AKI custom, and Green is E85).

  9. It is the engine which can utilize the higher octane. When driven with lower octane, you loose power, but it never works the other way around.

     

    The higher the octane number, the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating. Higher octane ratings correlate to higher activation energies.

     

    I'm only talking about new engines that are detuned to run lower octane in the US, such as some imports, but have a higher recommended octane rating. Not higher octane fuel alone.

    Octane recommendations

    Your vehicle is designed to use

    “Regular” unleaded gasoline with a

    pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.

    Some stations offer fuels posted as

    “Regular” with an octane rating

    below 87, particularly in high altitude areas. Fuels with octane levels

    below 87 are not recommended. Premium fuel will provide improved

    performance.


  10. I think its laughable that anyone thinks they will get more power from gasoline...

     

    I'm with you, except that is is sad that there are still people out there who think that higher octane gives you more power. Oh well.

     

    Besides, it is never wrong to invest more into something that is healthier, or serves other benefits, like Ethanol does.

    Actually in certain newer cars, the manufacturer will recommend a higher octane and require a lower octane for exactly that reason, it makes more power on higher octane. The Scion FRS is one recent example since it recommends 93 AKI but only requires 91. But I also know the Mazda Skyactiv engines were built for higher octane and then detuned for the US regular octane.

     

    Higher octane means a little better fuel economy too, but only when higher octane is recommended or required.
