  1. 2 hours to purge air? Wow - if they are that incompetent, I don't know that I would take the car back there! Maybe they were just pulling your leg to make it sound like the worked hard?? Either way, this 'air' situation is something to keep an eye on. Modern cooling systems should almost be 'self purging' They are designed so the air has a pretty easy way to work back to the filler neck as coolant is added. Plus the overflow bottle should allow air to escape when the engine warms, then pull coolant back in when it cools. Over a few hot/cold cycles the system should purge itself of any tiny amount of remaining air. Then, once the system is 'solid' with coolant, the overflow is just catching expanding coolant and returning it to the engine as it cools. If you're continually 'getting air in the system' it can mean a couple of things...1) the hose to the overflow bottle is cracked/broken. The air escapes when the engine warms up, but when it cools and should start to pull in coolant, it pulls air through the broken hose instead. 2) the head gasket is leaking compression gas into the cooling system. Either way, I'd keep an eye on the coolant overflow reservoir for the next couple of days. The engine should naturally exchange air for coolant over a few hot/cold cycles and the level could drop. Keep it topped up to the proper level so the purge process can continue. If you happen to see bubbles in the tank coming from the overflow hose while the engine is running, that is a bad sign - the head gasket is leaking into the cooling system. As for keeping carbon at bay, E85 works! I have to disagree that most modern cooling systems are designed so they are self purging, in fact the opposite is often true as the cap on the surge/expansion tank is often mounted lower than the top of the engine. Because of this lots of cars have very specific methods for the initial fill and bleed procedure and often note that "extreme engine damage can occur" if the procedure isn't followed and air is trapped in the system. On some of those systems it can take a lot of time to fully bleed the system as you need to warm it up and then let it cool subsantially before opening the system and adding the remaining coolant and in some cases it needs to be done multiple times. Of course it's not 2 hours of actual work it's just waiting for the engine to cool.
  2. One thing I forgot to mention is that GM sponsors then progrram overall as well a ton of teams directly, and today they had an award ceremony just for teams they sponsor. Ford and Chrysler sponsor a bunch of teams but not of the magnitude of GM. It is really making me consider making good on the threat I made to Ford when the discontinued Mercury, "Don't make me buy a Buick".

  4. It's time for my annual pitch again. Our FIRST Robotics Competition earned a spot in the World Championship event held this Thur - Sat. US First offers robotics programs for kids age 6-18 from all over the US and around the world. Teams compete in district, state, and/or regional events to earn their spot in the combined event. I won't go into a long spiel but it's a great opportunity to get your kids involved and interested in science and technology. It gives kids skills from basic problem solving to, programming, electronics, fabrication, CAD, and CNC depending on age level and program. Even if you have no kids or grand kids anybody who likes to tinker with, wrench on, or build things will be amazed at the innovative and diverse ways teams have constructed their robot.   5. I'd replate it for sure, I spent a number of years working shop that also had a carb shop and we had to replace lots of carbs that were ruined by commercial re-manufacturers bead blasting them. Of course I live in the very wet pacific NW. Plus the cad plating looks good.
  6. Bead blasting a carb doesn't do it any favors even more so with ethanol. You've removed the cad plating which was there to prevent corrosion. The engine looks sweet though.
  7. Even if the emissions were a slam dunk with E85, which they are not, they still have to certify it which is a fixed cost, and would have to be spread over a relatively small volume.

It's quite simple $$$$ emissions and MPG certifications cost big bucks and pretty much need to be done every year, it just doesn't make sense to certify a vehicle that would have significant retail appeal in a relatively small market. Sure they've done CA specific cars for years because they had to if they wanted to sell cars there, and it is the largest market in the US and now there are about a dozen states of Califorincation, and they also are mostly fairly large markets.
  9. I expect we will be seeing flex fuel eco-boost engines in the not so distant future. From what I understand they did a fair amount of testing with E85 when it was being developed as the "twin-force". It's computer controlled boost on top of a fairly high static CR and direct injection make it a perfectly suited to a flex fuel application, limit the peak boost heavily with gas and let it all hang out with E85. I suspect that they decided to delay the intro of a FFV version to get it to market quicker as well as allow a little time for the technology to build a good reputation.
  10. Well on his blog he has talked about his "not very safe" ghetto charger he used for the converted Suzuki so I'd suspect it or the supply side of the wiring over the Volt. The second fire isn't surprising since it did start in the battery pack of the Volt which was likely damaged thus exposing the lithium to air and likely some of the water used to fight the fire.
  11. Thanks for posting this. I find a couple of things interesting about the statements from Ford's people. First the use of RON for octane rather than what is commonly found on pumps which is (RON + MON) /2. The other is their outright lie that moving their SUV's from body on frame to unibody will decrease weight 250-750 lbs while the new unibody Explorer weighs near 500lbs more than it's body on frame predecessor. You'd think by now they would know that a unibody that is as stiff and provides as much crash protection as a body on frame vehicle of any significant size actually weighs more.
  12. What kind of vehicle is this? If it is an old carbed rig then yes a 180 is a good choice, that's pretty much the best compromise between engine wear and power. Gets the oil up to temp to boil out the water with 15~30min of running after the coolant is up to temp. For a modern FI rig you shouldn't change the temp of the t-stat unless you know how the computer reacts at particular temps. For example most Fords use a 192 degree t-stat from the factory. Depending on the exact model as little as 207 degrees will put the engine into overtemp mode where it will ramp up the idle speed, adjust A/F mixture and timing in an attempt to bring the coolant temp back in the normal range. With the trucks and some cars if it gets hot enough it will enter fail-safe cooling mode and start dropping alternating cylinders to turn it into an air cooled engine. Too cold of a T-stat can cause an engine to stay in open loop and/or warm up enrichment mode.
  13. I was thinking the same thing, .92 is a bit on the lean side for gas but pretty lean for E85, bringing the gas AFR to .90 and comparing it to .87 for E85 might show that E85 does indeed lower the EGTs a statistically significant amount.
  14. One thing to keep in mind is that those are recommendations not requirements and depending on a stations volume the change dates can lag even more.
  15. Well.... I'm 6'4, 275#, with long arms, wide hands... well "big boned"... Any way my 7 yr old could help Would it be something the "monkeys" at jiffy-lube et.al. could handle, if I brought them the new plugs I wanted them to install? : The 7 year old would be your better bet than most quick-lube or quick-tune places which will want to sell you their spark plugs anyway.
