I was on vacation near portage. Not far at all from break. I heard the pipeline is 30+ years old. The EPA is gonna keep this one shut down for awhile. Word was 2000+ barrels dumped.

They want to build a new monster refinery in SE South Dakota that would refine Canadian oil and the locals are screaming. Look up Hyperion oil refinery.

Yesterday 87 was $4.09, three days ago it was $3.65. Probably higher today considering some of you guys had $4.09 around there. Makes me happy I dont drive much, but sad that the 99 Blazer is the only beater running right now so the wife has to use it. Its the only ride I have that doesnt like ethanol.

A pipeline like this through the sandhills is a recipe for disaster, no other way to put it. Its only a matter of time before the aquifer is polluted and unusable. I guess if they want to wipe out the US farm economy, that is the best way to do it.
Not knocking E85, but I don't need any gasoline. Thanks. Home grown ethanol works fine for me.

Probably would cost  more to build a whole refinery in the area vs building a pipeline to an existing refinery and that's if there wasn't any NIMBY type opposition to it or if the Canadians expected them to follow some sort of  enviroment standards.  If there was national opposition to the pipeline, a refinery might set off a major backlash, even if just local.

What is the reason tar sands oil isn't refined closer to the source and then pipeline the refined products?

I think gas prices just jumped 10 - 15 cents in the last 24 - 36 hours here in Des Moines.    I'm getting to the point of a fill up here, I'll have to recheck the spread to see where E85 is selling at here.

The tar sands from the north are a abrasive high pressure application. You mix  sand abrasive and high pressure tar in any confined vessel and erosion inside the pipeline will take place making the pipe thin untill it fails (trust me, I'm in the pipe business). The Keystone pipeline through Nebraska was a big deal because of this very same scenario that just happened with the pipeline failure in Wisconsin. The Canadians (Keystone) first proposal was to run the pipeline through Canada to the west and to the refineries on the west coast and was rejected by the Canadians. Guess what, They didn't want it and the big oil corporations flexed their muscle and are forcing it into the US because the promise of jobs to the communities. The jobs would not be local because of the certification needed to weld petroleum pipelines and those trades would be brought in. I could go on and on and on......

Not happy about this situation. This pipeline break is the next county west of me and sits over the top of a very very important aquifer. While they say there is a clay layer 7 feet down- around here that clay layer is in places as little as 1 inch with pure sand over and sand/aggregate under. Now is there any doubt why the Keystone project over the Nebraska Sand Hills/Ogalla aquifer should have been questioned and rerouted? This pipeline in WI is only 14 years old and that is an infant by pipeline standards- and has leaked before. Koch/Flint Hills line about 40 miles from this site had a big spill 30 years ago. We also have the West Shore over in eastern WI that had a major leak last week- at least that one is understandable- it is a very very old line- it moves refined fuels up from Chicago to Green Bay.
If you are a lover of fossil fuels in WI's east side you will be really feeling that they are great (if you pay more it is worth more right?).
I topped off today with E85 in Wyocena WI at the Cenex for $2.99 (United Coop- an ethanol producer). Had to pay 3.19 down in Monticello IL later in the day though.

Yea, Dad saw a 7-11 that has been either $3.81 or $3.83 around 11am or so and when he and Mom drove by again after 2pm, it was up to $4.20 :o   The station I've bought from last couple times went from a 3% spread to a 13% spread in the last 6 days and that with them raising the prices of E-85 $.10 in that same length of time!  If I compare their prices on E-85 to what it is around here for Regular, there's a $.75 difference and considering that other V-6 powered Chrysler 200 owners have found that these cars tend to run better on 89 or especially 93 for gasoline than on 87, that puts the difference for what I paid to local Premium prices at around $1.15 a gallon :-*

Gasoline SOARING now with two price hikes a day!  This morning it was $3.89.  On the way home tonight it was $3.99.   I just drove by it and same station is now $4.09 .   They were $3.59 just two weeks ago.

E85 still at $3.29.   That's a 20% spread!

They weren't kidding about that, the station I filled up at last week jumped $.10 on E-85 and $.50 on regular and all the stations close to home jumped at least $.20 for regular!

"SOUTH BEND — Gas prices could go up by 10 to 35 cents per gallon in the next 48 hours, according to Patrick DeHaan, senior analyst for gasbuddy.com.

DeHaan said some areas in Michigan and Indiana could see gas prices closer to $4 a gallon because of “new-pipeline glitches that have come to light.”

According to a press release from Gassbuddy.com, three regional refineries are experiencing setbacks. It was also discovered that gas distribution company Enbridge had to shut a pipeline that delivers oil from Canada to Chicago.

DeHaan said that while it is expected for the situation to be temporary, prices will remain high as long as the issue continues.

As of 4:30 p.m. Wednesday the lowest gas prices in Elkhart, Goshen and South Bend remained at $3.66 and $3.67, the highest being at $3.75."

http://etruth.com/article/20120801/NEWS01/708019910/0/BUSINESS

I feel confident that there will be enough unleaded to mix in the 15% into E85. We are at $3.76 since Tuesday already. The lowest E85 I found was $3.15, that did not last long, they ran out Tuesday. Now they are up to $3.50 (Speedway/GasAmerica always hold a steady 30 cent spread, not fair).

With my traveling, I now mostly use cross country roads. Strange, but driving now without cruise control (and monitoring instead/average mpg), I get better gas mileage than with cruise!

Greetings!

Been seeing $3.81-$3.99 for regular around here the past several days, kinda curious how the prices around where I buy my E-85 will be.

A quick correction-  that Enbridge pipeline in Wisconsin isn't a gasoline pipeline.  It is a Canadian tar sands crude oil pipeline that burst.

Nasty, nasty stuff.

And Dept of Transportation Pipeline people are livid that it happened.

Gasoline rose .25 cents today to $3.94 from $3.60's in the last two days in Michigan.

E85 spread just turned yellow in one station.

There is a pipeline going through what I farm that crosses a creek. Over the years the bank has eroded exposing the pipe and it took them over a year when 60 or more feet was exposed before they would rip rap it. Could have been rip rapped way before and would not have been near as big of a deal. The pipe carries refined gasoline and diesel.
