Renault Megane 1.6 project
« on: March 12, 2010, 11:15:29 PM »
Hi!

we have a Renault Megane 1.6, convertet to ethanol by our piggy-back device (BIO-adapter)

now we will gain compression ratio to 12:1 by modifying pistons - miling heads is can't be done on this engine.

We were very surprised when we took off head - pistons was very clean.

yes, it still running on pure ethanol.

acceleration problem was gone - we start using more reach mixtures at WOT modes and weather become not so cold - we have up to +20C now.

torque is still much better than before conversion.

fuel consumption is still 10-12% less, than before conversion.

we will increase compression on some another engines soon.

Just thought I'd check in and see if the monster Renault is still running hard, and if the results are inline with what you expected?

I had a chance to talk with technical assistance at Mahle pistons yesterday, They said their 12.5:1 pistons run all the same design thickness, wrist pins, etc as their 'turbo' 9:1 pistons and would easily hold 15 pounds of boost, too.  He didn't think there would be issues with BMEP around 400psi or higher - which would max out the specs on my new clutch @ 340 ft/lbs torque.  So looks like I'll be making the CR bump soon.

i think yes, becouse we have very "dirty" gasoline.

on this photo carb, working on our gasoline and same carb, sent from abroad as "used" spare part. it was removed from working engine without any cleaning.

usually pistons in city-mode driving on gasoline looking like this:

Those are some really clean pistons,    did using ethanol clean off what the gas had on them would be intersted to see if it did.

engine was assembled in monday, everything works fine.

acceleration not increase, but torque is much, much bigger.

i think fuel or intake air heating will solve "acceleration problem" - we have temperature about -5C now.

fuel consumption is lower - about 10%, later i can tell  more accurate.+

any detonation at all

modifying of all 4 pistons cost about $100.
ignition timing not changed.

Wow, those are some nice looking pistons.   :)

I want to see how this turns out!

new pistons, compression ratio 12:1, original compression was 8.9:1 (measured value, but in manual for this engine was 9.8:1)

52 000 km on our really terrible gasoline, and 300 km on ethanol ;)

this is photo of head:

owner of car is engine mechanic, who "tune" racing engines. racing fuel is very hard-to-get and price is very high, methanol is banned as poison, price for pure drinkable ethanol is very high too. but fuel ethanol costs 0.5-0.6 $ / liter - they was very glad to hear this :-)

now 3 teams building own ethanol-fueled engines for racing - i will try to find out details

but this car is not for racing - but for daily driving

BIO-adapter is already tested - it is producing  in more than 2 years without significant changes.

now i developing new generation - it will work with stock lambda sensors for lean burn modes and with camshaft and crankshaft sensors for correction of ignition timing.

Yes- nice project. Keep us updated with the progress and results. I would assume that since you are doing this for a test of your Bio-adaptor that you will be staying with the standard OEM injectors?

Wow, those pistons are clean!  Do you know the mileage on the engine and how long on gas / how long on ethanol?

Keep us posted on the results of the compression ratio change.  Looks like I might be doing that in the near future as well.
