e85 singage
« on: February 01, 2010, 01:34:41 PM »
After traveling across parts of Nebraska, central Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin (using only e85) I have to say that the land of Lincoln is the BEST at advertising on the interstate and state highways the stops with e85...

Those blue squares on the sign posts where they point out the exits for gas stations are easy to see and very good.

Nebraska does something similar, but they don't keep up to date on all the stations, and only on the interstate from what I know.

Iowa has a small "fine print" emblem they put with each station on those signposts, but you have to look close to catch it.  Driving 70+mph on bad roads at night... not good.

Wisconsin is the WORST I've seen for pointing out e85 stations from the interstate.  It is a good thing I printed off maps from this site.

Thanks!

Can't find a local station?

That's why you need this:

http://tinyurl.com/pumpyourown

(500 gallon)

or this one:
http://tinyurl.com/yourownpump2

(1,000 gallon)

Good deal right now.  Park it out back behind the barn.

Michigan isnt bad on ethanol, but the UP is kinda scarce to find it. Iron Mountain, Ishpeming, and the Sault are the only stations up here. Granholm has a bunch of green initiatives and they encourage people to produce ethanol here. I wouldnt say Detroit is dragging their feet because they dont like ethanol, I would say its because certain companies that supply them with parts are more or less heavily influenced by big oil. If their supplier has 'delivery problems' it would cost them a fortune in down time, so they have the auto makers by the short hairs. The station in Ishpeming has a nice sized sign for the E85, and the pump isnt off in BFE either, its the full service part because they dont want people putting it in a non FFV because its cheaper without knowing what it is.

I'll agree its tough to find stations with E85 in Wisconsin, and Madison is pretty lame in regards to signage in the first place. Navigating that town is a pain every time I go through there. I would much rather avoid it entirely, but 151 is the shortest distance to get back to Nebraska from here. I know all the stations around the York Ne area, and a few in Lincoln/Omaha so finding fuel isnt a problem when I am home. Much easier than here in the UP, its 32 miles one way to get some E85 in Ishpeming.

As for people blaming ethanol for anything that goes wrong with their car, well stupid is as stupid does. Im tired of arguing with idiots, so I dont anymore. I see changes happening in the drag racing world, more people switching to E85 instead of race gas, but there are still plenty of those who say it isnt worth the effort and race gas is better despite being 2x or 4x the price. Change is coming, but it will be a slow road.

Not knocking E85, but I don't need any gasoline. Thanks. Home grown ethanol works fine for me.

 LOL funny as that is...I'd bet you 50 bucks as customers were asking dealers about this over the last few years that a few have said "Oh just use gas without ethanol in it and that will go away."

 >:(

OR-- do use it because your power will be down so you cannot reach terminal velocity and besides- you will run out of gas and it will shut down since E10 cuts your fuel mileage in half and your speed too >:D :P

very true Steve.

the Asian cars have virtually ignored ethanol, other then a hand few of US built trucks.

I just wish that "Detroit" would help support higher blends (e15-20) for regular non FFV cars, make smaller cars also FFV and do more to educate their dealers/mechanics on the fuel and its benefits.

Most of the dealers and mechanics I've talked to are still telling people that it will eat the gaskets, gum up the filters and destroy the engine...

That is so that if they would ever develop run-away cars like Toyota they could just say see---its E in non-flex cars ;D

IMO Detroit is the only one doing it...I just posted another post in regrads to the Asian manufacturers being the ones doing nothing...

Yeah I like Michigan, aay! Will just not have convenient blending up there.

I have a pretty good feeling about what Ford and GM have done to support alcohol fuels. Just wish they'd make it a fleet thing and bring it down to the smaller cars too!

sorry,

just that with the way the big 3 auto companies (aka Detroit) have been such opponents of ethanol, dragging feet or at best luke warm to ethanol over the years... it does not surprise me that the state of Michigan has not gone out of their way to encourage much less to support the auto industry.

Thanks to Renew, much of NORTHEASTERN wisconsin is sitting pretty good for the stuff. If you're ever up within 60 miles of Appleton-OShkosh- Green Bay area go there. I'm probably relocating to Michigan this year, and as great of a state that is...it's no ethanol haven.

Yes- Madison Is very poor for E85 pricing. The first two stations in that town put in very small tanks and as such they have to buy E85 from the oil companies ::)

we hadn't planned on going to Madison, so didn't have maps printed off for that far north.  Actually phoned my in-laws who looked the site up for us online, and directed us by cell phone...

Ended up at a station out west of town on University Avenue... price spread was ridiculous... I think about 5%...

Wisconsin only allows paid E85 signage to go on the blue signs IF you have drinking water and bathrooms. Since I have neither and the state does not have a policy of free posting any E85 stations on major hwy's, you would never know it exists. I too am glad for sites like this one.
