Husker- I started out one way then moved to the other. It depends on several things;

1) is E0 available?
2) can one buy the E85 direct and competitive with the cost of blending E98 and E0 at the pump?
3) does the retailer have a blending license? (and the staff time to apply for the credit?)

What I started with was buying E98 and mixing it with E0 at the pump. This required; 1) I get a blend license, 2) I pay the full bore price w/o credit for the E98 and then wait for the credit to come from Uncle Sam, 3) E0 unleaded generally costs a bit more than natural gasoline, 4) natural gasoline has no additives to cause problems in the final E85 blend.

Once the ethanol plant I buy from installed a blender arm - i switched to buying E70-85 from them and this made it a bit cheaper, tax and credit was far easier for all, and I no longer needed to pay an outside firm to change the E85 seasonal blend 4X per year. What I lost was the ability to offer a fixed E85 or E98 blend for the racing world via a dedicated posted "for racing only" hose. ;) I still buy E0 and the lowest grade I offer is an 89 octane E10.

I will say that for most E85 retailers the best route would be to buy E98 and mix with the gasoline they already have in the ground- even if it is E10. Why- because too few have access to ethanol plant blended E85- yet every plant can ship transports of E98. The blend arm costs an ethanol plant nearly $100,000.

A second benefit of blending e0 and e100 would be that by blending even the e10, this would allow the station (which could pass part of all on to the customer) to collect that blenders credit.

on the blender pumps... from what I've read, I'm a bit confused.

One place said they use two tanks, one e85, and one e10, and they blend these to get ratios that the customer chooses.

Other said they use two tanks, one e100, one e0 (regular gasoline) to get the rations that the customer chooses.

The latter sounds easier on the supply side, since you are actually the one doing all the blending.  How does it work?

Hey, that's great to hear that we will find ethanol blender pumps designated on E85prices.com--thanks Dan!  Phil, I am surprised to hear that ACE didn't update the Google map with your blender pumps.  Very surprised.  In fact, did you send a letter to them or just an e-mail?  I wonder sometimes if my messages go into an automatic Junk folder.

It is very incomplete-- I have tried emailing them multiple times to add my 18 sites to no avail --even though I had the very first 2. :P

I gave up ;)

Phil I'm working on it at E85Prices.com...

Notice the "B" "P" and "Com next to "Reported By  on the E85 Prices spreadsheet.. http://e85prices.com/

People will be able to sort for Blender Pumps by clicking the "B"  ..   All the submissions forms coding has to be updated..just taking some time..    A couple other new features..

Doesn't it bug you when you come up with a good idea or are the first to try something and nobody listens.

Not sure if someone has posted this here before, but from ACE here is a Google map of where all the existing ethanol blender pumps are:

Hopefully we will see these spread into additional states soon.  ACE & RFA held a very informative blender pump webinar today, which will soon be viewable here:
