Until recently, few South Dakotans had ever heard of "blender pumps."

That changed this week with a dust up between the governor and Senate Democrats over how to tax various blends of ethanol now available at only a few pumps in the state.

The pumps allow customers to pick a wide variety of ethanol blends - anywhere from 10 percent to 85 percent - by simply pushing the right button. It's about as complicated as buying a can of pop, and thanks to the changing demands for alternative fuels, soon will be a common sight across South Dakota.


Representatives of a the corn and ethanol industries announced a new incentive program Thursday to promote the use of blender pumps. They predicted the state will be a bellwether for the nation in bringing about their widespread use. They hope to have 100 new pumps in operation in South Dakota within a year.

Drivers of flex-fuel vehicles designed to run on ethanol blends as high as E85 might see fuel economy soar by using blends such as E20 or E30. And by 2012, Ford, General Motors and Chrysler all are committed to making at least half their cars and trucks flex-fuel vehicles, said Robert White, operations director of the Ethanol Promotion and Information Council.
