Finally - Zarco 66 open in Lawrence, KS
« on: February 08, 2008, 08:10:27 AM »
Well, it has been a long time in coming, but we finally have E85 in my home town:

http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2008/feb/08/new_gas_station_touts_its_biofuels_earthfriendly/

I'll have to get over there soon and see how the price spread is.  Kind of funny - this used to be a Citgo station and was usually among the cheapest gas in town.  When Hugo Chavez started flapping his gums, I quit going to the station and started buying fuel elsewhere, even though it usually ran a few cents more per gallon.  Wasn't long before the Citgo was out of business and Zarco took over.

Dan - Can you please add "Zarco 66, 900 Iowa St, Lawrence, KS 66044" to the E85 prices database.

Back on topic a little - it's interesting to read through the 'reactions' posted to that article.  People 'round here are usually pretty set in their ways.  Rusty would have a better chance getting half of the guys over at fordtrucks.com to switch to E85 than getting a couple of folks from Lawrence to switch.

I usually don't even bother to try and set anyone straight.  It usually degrades pretty quick into a "yes you can" - "no you can't" dispute.  At which point I mention that me and my immediate friends have burned thousands of gallons of E85 - mostly in non E85 vehicles - over the past 4 years and not had a fuel related failure.  Their response is usually to point out that someones sisters aunts cousin reportedly once had a fuel leak in a 1980 Buick after running some alcohol - or point out some spelling error in my post and call me stupid.  So I just give up!

Anyway - the Zarco place is pretty neat.  They have E10, 20, 30 and E85, plus some biodiesel blends for both on-road and off-road.  I filled up my F150 on Sunday, so that helped them get rid of 27 gallons of E85!

I hate to break the news to you, but it doesn't stop at mechanics.
I see the same kind of  ignorance in car dealers as well.
Even YOUNG PEOPLE that should know better--
one in particular who works at the local GM dealer...

I know Greengenes- I had to have a real heart-to-heart discussion with a very large dealership chain that had a history of blaming what their mechanics could not figure on ethanol. It came to a head when one of our owners had an engine miss. Dealership drained the tank, filled it with NL, cleared the CEL and told him not to run E85. He drove it another 10,000 miles and the miss was so bad-they told him it was E85's fault. He took it to a different (small) dealer and found it was a burned valve- first time they had seen this on E85 though it has been all around them for 3 years- all the previous burned valves they had seen in this engine family were in engines running straight NL. After sharing this info with the large dealer's local service writer, head mechanic, and Area mgr things have been far better.

Another group often needing training is the sales group- I have seen very pro service people and anti sales people in the same building (and of course vice versa).

You know ignorance is bliss.  It kills me that someone that works on cars is this far back with his skills.

"Yes, biofuel lowers emissions, but unleaded fuel will not eat through rubber ?O?-rings for fuel injectors or gaskets,? said Jim Vojtech, a mechanic at Automotive Analysts Inc. in Lawrence."

And that is the type of ignorance that can hold people back in a small town when he is the one that everybody has to have repair their vehicles. We have two stations 8 miles apart- one town has a auto dealer who also races alcohols, the other town has a mechanic who is not up to date with modern systems and badmouths ethanol. The two towns are the same size- which one do you think sells twice as much? It is good that Lawrence is a bigger town. Goes to show you that education of mechanics prior to opening an ethanol station is very important- that is a job for all of us, every day.

"Yes, biofuel lowers emissions, but unleaded fuel will not eat through rubber ?O?-rings for fuel injectors or gaskets,? said Jim Vojtech, a mechanic at Automotive Analysts Inc. in Lawrence."

And yet Mr Mechanic has probably never even actually seen an injector o ring that has been eaten through with ethanol ..but yeah he heard Bob and Frank over at the Tavern last night and thats what both of them claim..  ;D

Any vehicle designed to run on E85 already has the proper O rings ..and I would tend to believe that 99% of all injectors produced today have ethanol resistant "o" rings simply because of the ethanol already in half the nations gas supply

Do we have any hard data from manufacturers ?

Corey thanks for that great link.   When I get to that area I will fill up.   I am hoping a new station will also carry here in Joplin soon.
